Sweet Spring Semester

It's finally raining!

It's also raining projects, good, sweet projects. I am going into the second week of my second semester at CCA and I am really happy working (let's hope it carries out throughout the semester!)

There's a big change brewing as i am undecided about my major. Last semester I was working in clay under my ceramics major title. Over Christmas break I realized that was not what made me content, though I did really enjoy it. so as of now I am just having fun for a semester before I decide which major to stick to: ceramics, illustration, or painting/drawing.

I am exploring through a painting 1, illustration 1, and bookmaking 1 class. bookmaking is making me wildly happy so far. I love learning how to actually bind books and am already employing my few print skills from high school to make teeny lino prints for a project.

Below is the beginning stage of a piece I did over my winter break, part of my realization that I missed painting and drawing. Second is an in the process shot of my color chart for my painting class. I wanted to make it fun, so I did a Fibonacci spiral and put circles along it. Lastly, a few of the first teeny prints. I can't wait to work on them more tomorrow!

Still Life

Here's the still life from my intro to ceramics class. It's about how childhood gets pushed down inside of us. The outside is meant to be neutral colored and the now, and inside this older set of drawers there are colorful innards based off of a Gustav Klimt's painting, The Kiss, full of substitutions of toys that I used to play with when I was young. The corner that is break apart is the transition between the two, how sometimes the kid inside of us creeps out.

Finals Flash

Two more weeks left of school. Mostly I just have to glaze and tie together all my work. Below is a roughly full-sized self-portrait bust i recently "finished", pre-firing. It is still in the kiln. I am anxiously awaiting its removal, but not really because I am not its biggest fan. It will bode me well for my future though in terms of what i learned though, I'm sure.

Below my bust, is just a piece I did for fun in my sketchbook. It is supposed to be me when I was little, but as I did it from a photograph without a grid, it is what it is. I was just happier than happy to be drawing on paper again!

Last is just a photo of my work space from this weekend working on my still life for my intro to ceramics class.

Moving On

I just finished up my third black 8.5 by 11 inch sketchbooks. It's a funny thing. I have two pages that need to be finished up, but something in me is already to move on to the next one (that may be in part because my next one was started for a specific class last spring and i have already begun sketching in it... oopsie daisy)

I finished moving all my fall ceramics notes into a composition book, which is logical so I can keep all my ceramics notes and glaze shtuff together in one place.

This would probably signify my move to using composition books and my black sketchbooks. what can I say, I like uniformity and matching!

Art school is overwhelming sometimes, but it is Friday so the previous six days are weighing on my back, funny how that works. Just gotta keep going.

More New Work

I put up my newest self-portrait painting on my website. I hope to start a new painting on canvas soon!

Below are pictures of my latest finished creation. It's a vase for fun with imagery of my past and future. It is hawaiian red clay with a white engobe. It was then fired once (to what cone I do not know) and then i painted it with acrylic paint.

Guarded

I just finished building my first large clay piece ever, it is about 33 inches tall. It excites me that I built something so large and weird. I am looking forward to adding color and firing it. The craft of the piece doesn't please me perfectly, but it also works for the concept behind the piece, so I am letting it go for this piece, especially since I am just jumping into ceramics now.

Postcard Project II

In an older post (see below), I described and posted pictures of my original Postcard Project (also referred to as my Soul Project or Soul Postcards). I am currently churning out some new ones, it is a long process especially now that school has started. I have four done and am looking forward to making new ones in the new few weeks to months. I am trying to decide how many I will send out in this installment. The quotes I am using this time overlap with a few of the old quotes, but also reflect some new quotes I have found in the past year or so. Here's a preview of one of them:
